The play, written by Cuban-America Raúl De Cárdenas, is directed by Roberto Sánchez, with local actors. It is presented in Spanish with English super-titles.
“The National Pastime” is a tragedy set in Havana, Cuba in late 2003. Miguel Ángel has been banned from Cuban baseball because his father, César, had in the past denounced him as a rebel against the regime. Yuri is an up and coming pitcher in the Cuban league who trains with Miguel Ángel. The two men become involved with each other, but are discreet because of the intolerance for such love in Cuba. Yuri arranges to escape from the island to Miami with the dream of going into the big leagues and the promise to help Miguel Ángel later join.

Probably the most staged Cuban playwright living in the United States, Raúl De Cárdenas was born in Havana, where at an early age his first three plays were produced and two of them presented on Cuban TV. In 1961, after Fidel Castro's now famous harsh and dictatorial speech to intellectuals, writers, poets and journalists, at the National Library, where he declared "within the revolution everything, outside of the revolution nothing," Raúl De Cárdenas decided to leave his country where without his permission his third play "La Palangana" was published and produced more than 100 times. Before moving to Los Angeles, he lived in New York where he saw the first production of one of his plays in the United States. He is the recipient of the coveted "Letras de Oro" Award for his play about the life of the Cuban patriot Jose Martí, "Un Hombre al Amanecer", and most recently his one man show "La Ceci" received two nominations by the ACE organization in New York City. His plays have been published and staged by prestigious theatrical organizations like the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts in Los Angeles, the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre in New York City, and Havanafama Theatre Company in Miami. He continues to write about the Cuban experience and the struggle for Cuba's freedom and human rights.
