FREE & AFFORDABLE PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCES AT THE ACADEMY OF ARTS & MINDSCOCONUT GROVE.

~ On the Plaza ~ at 3138 Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove, in conjunction with philanthropic founders Manuel Alonso-Poch and Lili Renteria hosts expressive pieces of work, intriguing theatrical performances and thought provoking creations in a series of impressive artistic venues during the coming weeks.

The series opens Friday, August 28 at 6:00 p.m. with a poignant FREE exhibit of local Miami photographer Opal A. Jones and her Graffiti Redefined. With her keen photographer's eye, Ms. Jones searched the Greater Miami area for the past 18 months and recorded a rich palette of true graffiti artists. "By acknowledging the talent perhaps we can recognize these artists as a legitimate part of the cultural continuum." Visual artist and graphic designer Teo Beciero has reproduced several numbered, limited signed prints that will be part of the exhibit and available for purchase at Friday's opening. Proceeds benefit the Academy of Arts & Minds visual arts programs.

Also on Friday August 28, at 9:00 p.m., following Graffiti Redefined, the all female world music band Santamorena performs in a powerful concert in the Academy's acoustically engineered Abanico Theatre. The dynamic duo of Alma and=2 0Niurka, accompanied by four other talented female musicians bring to the stage a perfectly balanced and authentic world music sound with great beauty, sensitivity and zeal. Tickets to the Concert are $15.00 for adults $10.00 for students and senior citizens. Proceeds benefit the Academy of Arts & Minds music programs in pursuit of the finest performing arts school in the area.

On September 3, Thursday at 8:00 p.m., a profoundly heart rendering theatrical production, Retornado, a tragic comedy performed by Tito Estrada, will be playing, "en español," at A&M's Abanico Theatre, - On the Plaza - The one-man drama deals with the problems migrants encounter when they return home. Three characters in one - actor, immigrant and citizen - provoke a dramatic patchwork of deep feelings dealing with all aspects of immigration including cultural, social and the human effects and affects. Premiering September 5, at 9:00 p.m., - On the Plaza - at A&M's Abanico Theater is Bernarda Bernarda, a controversial and profound adaptation of a Federico Garcia Lorca classic under the direction of Juan Roca. Bernarda Bernarda deals with adult situations and is recommended for individuals 18 and over. General admission tickets are $25. Students, senior citizens and groups are $15. The play runs through September 20 with Friday and Saturday presentations at 9:00 p.m., and Sundays at 6:00 p.m. For ticket sales and information call 305.448.1105.
