The Whole Island: Six Decades of Cuban Poetry
University of California Press
Thursday, November 5 7:00 pm Free admission
Editor Mark Weiss will read with Christopher Winks, Margaret Carson, and Iraida Iturralde from his new anthology, the first comprehensive bilingual overview of Cuban poetry to be published during the past sixty years, compiling a breadth of iconic authors including Nicolás Guillén, José Lezama Lima, and Nancy Morejón, as well as poets who remain almost unknown to the English-speaking world, such as Fina García Marruz, José Kozer, and Raúl Hernández Novas. The anthology is an essential source for understanding the literature and culture of Cuba, its diaspora, and the Caribbean at large. "A masterwork of cartography: a map of what is, for English-language readers, an almost entirely unexplored territory, full of poets at home or in the diaspora whom we ought to know."—Eliot Weinberger
This event has been organized in collaboration with the Cuban Cultural Center of New York
